Suicide attack on Rashid Akbar Khan Nawani

BHAKKAR, Oct 6, On 4:48pm : At least 23 people were killed and 65 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the Dera (House) of PML-N leader Rashid Akbar Niwani here on Monday.

The blast took place at 4.48pm when Rashid Akbar Khan was meeting people of his constituency, listening to their problems. Body parts, shoes and shredded clothes were scattered all over the House. Some of the bodies were beyond recognition.

The seriously wounded were taken to the Nishtar Hospital in Multan.

Witnesses said that about 150 people were in the Dera (House), most of them to collect “Benazir income support cards” or seek the MNA’s favour to get police jobs.

Rashid Akbar Khan was taken to the Bhakkar DHQ hospital where he was operated upon for a fractured arm. He also suffered injuries in legs.

Rashid Akbar Khan said he was talking to the people when all of a sudden there was a bang and some people fell over him.

He said he was about six feet away from the place where the suicide bomber had blown himself up. He said he remained safe because four people were in front of him. “When I regained sense I saw bodies and injured people everywhere.”

Rashid Akbar Khan said his dera (House) was normally visited by about 2,500 people everyday but the gathering on Monday was unusually large.

As the news of the blast spread in the city, all shopping centers and markets were closed and shopkeepers rushed to their Dera (home). Some angry youths burnt tyres and raised slogans against the government.

District Nazim Hameed Akbar Niwani, elder brother of the Rashid Akbar Khan (MNA), said that all members of the family were safe. He announced that all schools and colleges in the district would remain closed on Tuesday as a mark of protest.

Some of the dead were identified as Haji Habibullah, Khan Niazi, Madah Hussain, Abdur Rashid, Haji Aashiq, Ali Raza, Aashiq Husain, Allah Nawaz, Ejaz Husain, Abdur Rehman, Manzoor Husain, Malik Haider (head constable), Muzammil Abbas, Mulazim Hussain, Malik Ghulam Mohammad, Jehangir Hussain, Ghulam Hussain, Azmat Husain and Abid Ali.

Police and other law-enforcement personnel rushed to the place and cordoned off the area. The city’s exit and entry points were sealed.

Only five doctors were there in the DHQ hospital to look after the injured people and medical facilities were inadequate. A large number of people rushed to the hospital to donate blood.

have condemned the suicide attack on MNA Rasheed Akbar Khan Niwani from Bhakkar, terming it a part of the conspiracy against democracy. The suicide Blast  in which 23 people lost their lives and 65 were injured.

1.Altaf Hussain (Muttahida Qaumi Movement)

Altaf Hussain has also condemned the suicide attack on Niwani. He said that the elements involved were enemies of humanity. Hussain demanded that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani take notice of the attack and provide protection to the common man.

Imran Khan strongly condemned the suicide blast in Bhakkar that caused loss of several precious lives and injuries. “The perpetrators of such inhuman activity have nothing to do with Islam and rather bringing a bad name to religion and country,”

Shahbaz Sharif distributes cheques among Bhakkar blast victims.

Mian Shahbaz Sharif visited the District Headquarters Hospital and distributed cheques among the injured and victims families of the Monday suicide blast.

He gave away Rs. 300,000 cheque each to the 49 injured and Rs. 500,000 each cheque to the families of victims, who had lost their lives in the tragic incident.
